Electric Thermal Storage. Water storage capacity, boiler sizing and expansion tank calculations for the purpose of heating your home with low cost off peak electricity

Electric Hydronic Thermal storage  and time of use smart meters with discounted off peak rates

Water storage capacity, boiler sizing and expansion tank calculations for the purpose of heating your home with low cost off peak electricity by Canadian Radiant Design Ltd, TECA certified Hydronic Designer. BC, Ontario and  Nova Scotia are Provinces in Canada using smart metres.

Heat during the low off peak rates,
Store the heat and
Later release the heat as required.

Many Provinces and States are implementing smart hydro meters that have the ability to track electricity used by a customer, combined with the time of the day the energy is used. The electric utility may charge a high rate during peak periods and a much reduced rate during off peak periods (typically at night). This encourages customers to minimize use during peak periods but also opens up the opportunity for customers to save money by shifting their power used to heat their homes to  the off peak discounted electricity rate.
If you have Hydronic heating or are planning to use hydronic heating This could be a very good thing to heat your home with an electric boiler using the discounted off peak rates. Most or all of the heat required can be obtained with the nearly 50% off electricity rates. Storage capacity may also be utilized for cooling in summer for time of use savings year round.
Using Ontario as an example with their off peak rates at close to ½ of the peak rates, hydro looks very competitive to any energy form.

Heating your home with storage water requires large volumes of water,,,guessing and adding a 40 gallon storage tank to your system would be….wishful thinking.
Boiler sizing is very important; boiler must be upsized to provide all the heat requirements in less time. Expansion tank sizing is very important, inadequate capacity will cause pressure relief to release and over time this valve may malfunction which can be very unsafe.
