Summer
Reflective Barrier reduces the transfer of heat into your home, keeping you cool and saving on air conditioning costs, or reduce the need to for air conditioning. Attics can get to 140 degrees F in summer even with proper ventilation, batt insulation slows, but also stores  heat which then transfers to your living space. Reflective barrier works by reflecting much of the heat even before contacting  your existing insulation  to save energy and improve comfort.

Winter
Reflective Barrier reduces heat leaving your home. Radiant heat always travels from  hot to cold, the reflective barrier reflects heat trying to escape, right back into your home. The material also acts like a blanket to reduce air currents in your insulation, which allows your existing insulation to to do its job better.  Reflective barrier saves energy and improves comfort.

Radiant Heat always travels from the source (hot) to cold.

In Summer, heat is reflected away from your living space with the radiant barrier.

In winter, heat is reflected back in your home

tin foil stove

Try experimenting yourself, with a piece of aluminum foil (shiny side down), just off the surface of your stove.  Carefully put your hand (without touching) just off the foil. Very little heat reaches your hand because the shiny aluminum  reflects about 96% of the radiant heat.

In this photo your hand is the source of heat. The heat is leaving your hand, radiating towards the cold ice. With the foil in place (shiny side up) very little cold is felt on your hand.

In this photo the foil is in direct contact with the hot pan. Do not directly touch the foil or pan!!!! keep your fingers above the foil and pan. Over the foil it is not nearly as hot as the pan (because it radiates very little of the heat, only about 4% emmissivity.

While dust settling on barrier can reduce reflective properties. This 20 year old home shows virtually no dust.
